I was watching the drama Gotham recently when I was struck by the quote in my title. In the episode Detective Gordon is making the point that in society everyone needs to matter – including the homeless, the runaways and the (so-called) undesirables.

Gordon is the one person who believes Gotham can be better – that society is capable of changing to ensure that every person matters.

Of course, he is seen as naive and he has a struggle on his hands, but he perseveres.

So many in society strive for self and suffer with selfishness, rather than striving for social cohesion and empathetic service. This is one of the root causes of inequality and social tensions. There is an Indian poem which goes like this…

Pray, don’t find fault with the man that limps,
Or stumbles along the road.
Unless you have worn the moccasins he wears,
Or stumbled beneath the same load.

We need to spend more time trying to understand others, rather than judging them – this means taking time to get to know them, and to listen to their stories.

What matters to you, and how will you fight for that? Get to know the issues and seek to find your part in the solution.

Who matters to you and how will you fight for them? Get to know them; spend time with them; support, love and serve them.

In all your struggles, and in all your battles may you still enjoy the journey 👣
